So, how are people riding bicycles from the west side to access to the town’s only (admittedly poorly maintained) bike lanes on S Bridge?

New Jersey e-bike law: It’s hard to see how Sen Mukherji’s S4830 amendment will ease the confusion.
In fact it will just add to the bewilderment, and NJ will still end up with the most draconian, restrictive and plain unworkable e-bike legislation in the world.
If only they’d asked…

I took a stroll to see how the council’s much heralded safety project at the skewed intersection Bridge St and Drs James Parker Blvd is progressing – more on this another day…
However, given the town’s long list of cycling and pedestrian safety awards, it wasn’t a great surprise to see how the only bike lanes in Red Bank are fairing…

Year-on-year in 2026 New Jersey traffic deaths have fallen by over 7%.
Unfortunately pedestrian and cyclists’ deaths have actually risen and now constitute over a third of all deaths on NJ roads:
10/30/2026: 444 dead in 300 days on New Jersey roads in 2026, including 137peds + 13cyclists
Each victim killed either in or being hit by a car, bus or truckTotal fatalities have fallen by 35 year-on-year
Bikeped deaths have risen to over a third of the state’s total

| Red Bank council caucus meeting… |
Usually published only 24 hours before the next council meeting—leaving the community little opportunity to prepare—the agenda and previous minutes typically list the mayor’s latest proclamations about his friends and the latest “tick-the-box” events. These are followed by a list of ordinances and resolutions, often itemized with blank placeholders, ready for a superficial “discussion” and the inevitable unanimous rubber-stamping by the town’s Faithful.
Like the vast majority of the Red Bank community I have now come to the conclusion that it’s futile to attend these charades, but I recommend reading the minutes of the previous meeting to see what the council and its members are up to. In this case I was drawn to Councillor Nancy Facey-Blackwood’s report given to the October 8 meeting.

| Vision Zero is a road safety strategy that aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries while improving safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all |
This concerns a document drawn up by one of the council’s army of “consultants” regarding the implementation of a Vision Zero Local Safety Action Plan. Apparently the draft has been “released” to the mayor’s selective and unaccountable Complete & Green Streets Committee, yet, as usual, no provision for any consultation with the community, several of whom are either road safety engineers or veteran road safety campaigners, in the compilation or review of this vital programme for safer streets.
All this from a council which claims it is dedicated to open government yet doesn’t trust its constituents.
Kudos to Princeton Tapinto’s monthly Princeton Crash ReportInteresting to hear that the UCI is to re-introduce Derny racing…
The return of the derny? I hope so…

The New Jersey “e-Bike” law is an all round disaster…
Just another New Jersey “e-bike” law casualty
C3 e-bikes – pedelec, motor assisted to 28mph/45kmh, no throttle – are often used as pacers for training and organised recreational club rides, as well as recovery/rehabilitation for people who use road, tri- and gravel bikes

In 2026 a third of all deaths on New Jersey roads are either a pedestrian or cyclist…
New Jersey roads: Year on year fatalities are reported to have fallen by 8.5%
However, 2026 cyclist and pedestrian deaths currently aggregate to the same as 2025 which means the %age of VRU deaths is now running at 32% of the total1 in 3 NJ deaths on the road is either a cyclist or pedestrian

Most days I monitor fatalities on NJ roads, compiled from the NJ State Police website. I report via @njcrash.bsky.social on Bluesky
Basic trend for this year means that more than 10people/week die on NJ streets, every single victim killed either in or being hit by a car, bus or truck. Worse, pedestrian and cyclist deaths are up on this time last year.
8/18/2026: 334 dead in 229 days on New Jersey roads in 2026, including 98peds + 11cyclists
Every single victim killed either in or being hit by a car, bus or truck
Pedestrian and Cyclist deaths on NJ streets are now continuing to trend worse than in 2025

Red Bank has the highest crash/mile rate in Monmouth County.
The town has several awards for road safety. You might wonder how?
Meanwhile in Red Bank NJ, “accidents” will happen…
The only way most of us know is if they’re posted on Fb
Getting data on these cases is impossible, even in incidents involving KSIs
Walking or biking in the town is at least 5x more lethal than similar trips in Europe…
