Meanwhile In Red Bank NJ: 20261105

Just taking a brief look and making a couple of notes about the town’s much vaunted pedestrian safety scheme now being installed on the offset intersection on Drs James Parkers Blvd and Bridge St.
Hard to believe the mayor and council paid $70k to their consultants to come up with this mess.
Is that centre island wide enough to safely accommodate a person with a child buggy, or pushing a wheelchair as they attempt to use the cross-walk?

So, how are people riding bicycles from the west side to access to the town’s only (admittedly poorly maintained) bike lanes on S Bridge?

Best information on scheme available from town hall… posted on Facebook
Reminder, total deaths on NJ roads are falling this year… Pedestrian and cycling deaths are actually up on last year.
I foresee some spectacularly dangerous moves by impatient drivers to make left turns whilst avoiding, or not, the centre island.

Vision Zero or Zero Vision?

Year-on-year in 2026 New Jersey traffic deaths have fallen by over 7%.

Unfortunately pedestrian and cyclists’ deaths have actually risen and now constitute over a third of all deaths on NJ roads:

10/30/2026: 444 dead in 300 days on New Jersey roads in 2026, including 137peds + 13cyclists
Each victim killed either in or being hit by a car, bus or truck

Total fatalities have fallen by 35 year-on-year
Bikeped deaths have risen to over a third of the state’s total

Traffic Matters

.Kudos to Princeton Tapinto’s monthly Princeton Crash Report

It’s great for pedestrian and cycling safety that this sort of information is being compiled in the town.

Unfortunately this sort of information isn’t available in Red Bank, making it impossible for road safety campaigners in the town to identify prevailing issues and ensure the town makes effective decisions for safe and complete streets.

You Got To Walk It Like You Talk It…

New Jersey… Always willing to talk the talk… Not so good for those who walk the walk…

In 2026, pedestrian and cycling deaths on NJ streets – and sidewalks – continue to rise as a percentage of road deaths, even as the total falls.

9/25/2026: 384 dead in 267 days on New Jersey roads in 2026, including 113peds + 11cyclists
Every single victim killed either in or being hit by a car, bus or truck

10 dead every week on NJ roads

New Jersey roads: Year on year fatalities are reported to have fallen by 8.5%
However, 2026 cyclist and pedestrian deaths currently aggregate to the same as 2025 which means the %age of VRU deaths is now running at 32% of the total

On ‘Yer Bike

Bike parking at Red Bank NJ’s (NO WHEELS!) Broadwalk “street fair”…

The town is a multiple safe streets awards winner… No! Really?

BikePed infrastructure benefits the community AND local businesses, services, security and the environment.

The extent of Red Bank’s multi-million $ Broad Walk “development”
bicycle parking facility. These consumer-level products are commonly
known as ‘Wheel Wreckers” and are highly portable with a small truck
